Whenever we hear of people wanting to lose weight/ lose fats, others' advices to them would either be dieting or running. Running is, probably, most common advice given to people who desire to see a weight loss. Truly, how effective is running in reducing weight/ fats?
Losing fats is simply about expending more energy than the intake. Metabolism is the answer to long-term effective fat loss. The higher the metabolism, the higher the rate at which energy is being expended. Dieting, which reduces calories intake, will actually cause our body to store more fats for energy. It results in a drop in metabolism. Muscle is the most metabolically active tissue in our bodies. Thus, in order to increase metabolism, one good effective way is to increase the muscle mass in our bodies. This will in turn increase our bodies' ability to burn calories at a faster rate.
Then what about running? We often hear that by running long distance and for a longer period of time, our bodies will burn fats. Yes, it is true that a higher percentage of fats as compared to carbohydrates will be burned when we do aerobic training. However, as we look at the absolute value, the amount of calories burned is actually lesser than that of resistance training. Also, our bodies are very quick to adapt. If we continue to run for the same distance and pace, our bodies will adapt and become efficient in carrying out this activity. Lesser energy will be required; lesser calories will be burned. Lastly, running actually breaks down muscle mass. With lesser muscle mass, our ability to burn calories reduces.
As mentioned, we should increase muscle mass to raise our metabolism and this can be achieved by doing resistance training. Resistance training requires our bodies to overcome resistance (weights). It helps to build strength and muscle mass. Our bodies continue to burn energy even after a session of resistance training due to the temporary elevation in metabolism. While we are resting, our bodies operate mainly in the aerobic system. When our metablism is increased, our bodies naturally burn energy at a higer rate even when we are not doing any cardio training.
With that, I better start doing more resistance training!
Fasting
What comes to your mind at the mention of fasting? Yes, there will be 2 things that come to our minds. Since the first one is quite a sensitive topic, we shall just talk about the second one which is go without food for a period of time. Fasting is the discipline of abstinence from food. It can also consist of eating very little or abstinence from certain foods.
For all these while, we as Christians fast as well. Similarly, we will go without food for a period of time. Our church practise fasting and we usually do so when we want to pray for something. Why is that so?
Fasting is an act of humility before God, undertaken in part to seek His divine intervention in the events of our physical world. It also helps us to concentrate on the Word of God to make it more meaningful. It can help us regain a strong sense of spiritual determination as well.
This time round, instead of the usual practice of abstaining from food, we are to fast from the w.w.w (those that cause addiction). And so, today is Day 1 of my attempt to fast from w.w.w.
I shall keep it to one week!
JIa you=)

School holiday continues...
Yes, school holiday is ending but still on. So free, we decided to head down to Raffles Place Park to queue for the SCMS 2011registration.
The response was overwhelming! So many actually went down to queue as well. Online registration is available but physical registrants will receive additional perks (only at today's event). * First 100 will receive a premium goodie bag worth $800. The next 900 will receive a goodie bag worth $400 * So attractive how not to be tempted.
Not too sure if it is true, I overheard that the first person in the queue came since the night before! In other words, he camped at the event venue. Maybe I should do the same as well since I've got a tent. ha
Hours passed but we were still queueing. YB reached since 10:10am while I arrived at 10:45am. We were crossing our fingers that we would be the first 1000 registrants so as to receive the extra goodie. Thankfully, we are! Anyway, the goodie aint that fantastic afterall. We didn't mind.
Runners take 4-5 hours to complete the marathon. We too, took 4-5 hours (5hrs for Yb and 4 for watatshi) to do the registration.

On 21st June 2011, I got really upset.
Why must it appear?
Not becos of what has happened now, it is more of the past.
Something I just can't brush it aside easily.
Thanks for providing so much unhappiness.
I really don't feel like talking anymoreLabels: Bao

Reflection of the day
Like my mum always says, there is no ugly woman but a lazy one.
I am the lazy one.
People tend to covet for things they do not have. At the moment, I want to work. Irony isn't it.

Fear One of my greatest fear has been overcome! Praise and thank God. It has been my fear since 2007 or 08? It took me so many years to pick up my courage again and re-take it. Nevertheless, I am really glad that I've finally passed it. IFC Class 1 (23 March 2011)Labels: Cheer
